The Victoria County History (Sussex, vol. 4, 1953) notes: "A church here is mentioned in Domesday Book, [...] but the earliest work now traceable is that of the arcade which formerly opened into the north aisle; this, with the chancel arch, is of the late 12th century; in the 13th century a south aisle was added. At a date unknown the north aisle was demolished; and in the 19th century the chancel was rebuilt, a few old stones being re-used [...] The font stands in the west bay of the aisle, screened off in modern times to make a baptistery; it is a plain octagon of perhaps the 15th century." Noted in Sussex Parish Churches [www.sussexparishchurches.org/content/view/400/33/] [accessed 12 September 2012]. The font has two covers: one is octagonal and flat, with metal decoration and ring handle; sits directly on the basin top; the other is shaped like a truncated pyramid, octagonal, with panels on the sides, and is raised and lowered by a pulley system. [NB: we have no information on the font of the 11th century church here].
