view of church exterior - northwest view

Scene Description: Source caption: "St Nicholas, Kemerton. The church has an early 13th century tower, updated in the 16th century and restored in 1879 by William White. The main building dates from 1846-9 and is a major work of R.C. Carpenter, an architect of choice for the Cambridge Camden Society. The client was Rev. Thomas Thorp, the President of the Society from 1839 to 1859. A wonderful building that deserves to be better known."

Scene Description: Source caption: "St Nicholas, Kemerton. Looking East, showing the splendid set of Carpenter furnishings of the late 1840s. R.C. Carpenter was a favoured architect of the Cambridge Camden Society who championed the return of what they saw as the traditional medieval church in all of its forms. Kemerton is a textbook example, lovingly cared for."

The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Gloucester, vol. 8, 1968) notes: "A description of the original church made just before the rebuilding shows that it dated from various periods. [...] The north arcade was early Norman [...] It was almost entirely rebuilt in the 1840's"; there is no mention of a font in the VCH entry for this church. The modern octagonal font is in the single-volume type design of the 14th century, introduced probably in the 1840s' restoration of the church [NB: we have no information on the original font of this church].
