Church Notes: "Two previous churches had been constructed on the site since the 5th century, but they had both been destroyed. Work on the modern Cathedral began in 1099, under the direction of the master builder Lanfranco, over the site of the sepulchre of Saint Geminianus, Modena's patron saint. The Saint's remains are still exhibited in the cathedral's crypt. The present cathedral was consecrated by Pope Lucius III on July 12, 1184." Studied and illustrated in Cavicchioli (2001). Baptismal font of pink marble consisting of a roughly hemispherical basin decorated with mouldings and ribbed patterns, raised on a round-to-square baluster base decorated with ram heads. The cover, also of pink marble, consists of a quasi-cylindrical base and a dome top; the sides of the base are decorated with garlands and cherubs, the dome itself with fleurs de lis in a reticular pattern; ball finial; the side of the base of the cover opens to give access to the baptismal water. [NB: we have no information on the font from the 1088 church here built by Lanfranco, nor do we have any information on the fonts from the two earlier churches here, both of them destroyed before the 11th century].
