The Victoria County History (Oxford, vol. 5, 1957) notes: "Wheatley, although a separate tithing, was in the Middle Ages part of Cuddesdon parish [...] There was a chapel at Wheatley by 1427 [ ...] Wheatley was served by a curate, probably chosen by the Vicar of Cuddesdon in the Middle Ages and later by the Bishop of Oxford. [...] The medieval chapel was dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin and lay on the south side of the High Street, presumably where the War Memorial now stands. [...] In 1629 Archibald Archdale failed to get it consecrated as a church. [...] The building was repaired in 1715, [...] but was pulled down in 1785 to make way for the new church. [...] The registers date from 1835." [NB: it is not clear whether a baptismal font existed in the old chapel].
