Church Notes: the reredos is believed to be south-German or north-Italian; the altar said to be German; the stoup could be Italian
No individual entry for Lotherton found in the Domesday survey. Bogg (1902) reports "an ancient holy-water stoup" of the same age as the north doorway, that is, 12th-century Norman. Kirk (1920) notes that the first mention of this site occurs "in a grant of King Edgar [...] in A.D. 963 [...] Unfortunately, the mediaeval and later records in which Lotherton is mentioned, contain no reference to the chapel. The founder's name, the date of foundation and the dedication are not disclosed. [...] The edifice of Lotherton was probably erected [...] as a chapel-of-ease to the mother church of Sherburn, in whose parish it remained until 1908 [...] No chantry appears to have been established at Lotherton, [...] The ancient dedication of Lotherton Chapel does not appear to be known. [...] No trace of burials have been found at Lotherton. [...] At the reopening after repairs, in 1917, Lotherton Chapel was provisionally dedicated in the name of St. James." Kirk (ibid.) proceeds to inform that there is a lack of documentary evidence as to the uses of the chapel throughout the centuries, though some "divine services" are not to have taken place in it . Kirk (ibid.) further quotes "Mr. Bilson" [John Bilson, FSA] in dating the fabric of the chapel to "the last quarter of the twelfth century", from which time some windows and the western entranceway are said to date. "The chapel retains some of its fittings. which are of various dates. Against the inside of the west wall of the nave is a short stone shaft with base and scalloped capital, the top of which is hollowed out as a basin; this is of the original twelfth century period, and is either a holy-water stoup or (more probably) a pillar piscina." The description of the stoup or piscina in Kirk [cf. supra] does not seem to match at all the object now located in the chapel, which suggests the existence of another stoup there. The object of which we have images is a font or stoup of considerable craftmanship and appears to be made of marble, the kind more likely to be found in an Italian church than in an obscure Yorkshire chapel. The basin is rather shallow, round with tapering sides exquisitely decorated with a round arch on torsade columns with carved capitals; inside the arch are two facing peacocks drinking from a fountain that is of almost the same shape as the stoup here [NB: only one of these arches is visible in our source, but there appear to be four of them at 90-degree angles]; the sides all around are decorated with a fine pattern of foliated motifs, leaves of various kinds, framed with thin mouldings decorated with fret-work or rope motif. The round slender pedestal base, of the same material [marble?] has several decorative sections: atop is a capital-like with large foliated motifs; below it is a narrow band of fret-work of original design; farther down is a section of torsade pattern, below which is an octagonal section decorated with panels of reticular and floral patterns; the lower base of the pedestal is octagonal to square and made up of four standing turtles with their upper legs leaning against a rope moulding; below them a plain moulding atop a plain square section. The quality of the workmanship is superb. [NB: we have not been able to find any further information on the origin of this object, nor do we have a confirmation on the stoup/piscina noted in Kirk].
