The Victoria County History (Essex, vol. 6, 1973) notes: "There was a church at Wanstead by 1208. [...] The ancient parish church, demolished in 1790, stood about 70 ft. south of the present one. Its site is still traceable in the churchyard by a line of gravestones marking the central aisle and memorial slabs marking the chancel. It was enlarged and renovated in 1709–10"; the VCH entry notes of the new church: "The foundation stone was laid in 1787 and the building completed in 1790"; there is no mention of a font in the VCH entry in either the old or the new church. Evidence of remains of an old font at St. Mary's exists at the Essex Record Office archives [ref.: T/P 266/33], 'The History of Wanstead Vol. 10 1952 to 1963' [https://secureweb1.essexcc.gov.uk/SeaxPAM/result_details.asp?DocID=952370] [accessed 16 April 2012]: "four photographs of burial vaults - including remains of font, and Child and Tylney coffins - at St Mary's Church, Wanstead, 1963, with plan of crypt, elevations of crypt wall and of font".
