Font Notes:
The Victoria County History (Essex, vol. 6, 1973) notes: "In 1086 there was a priest on Robert son of Corbutio's manor of Leyton, [...] The church of Leyton was granted to Stratford Abbey with the manor about 1200 by Richard Corbutio [...] The parish church of St. Mary the Virgin stands on the north side of Church Road, and consists of chancel, aisled nave, and embattled north-west tower. It is mainly of the early 19th century, but the tower and parts of the north wall of both nave and chancel date from the 17th century. [...] The font is believed to be of 15th-century origin, but the pedestal was given in 1827 by William Cotton." The present font consists of an octagonal basin the panels of which are decorated with floral motifs inscribed in cusped quatrefoils, graded mouldings at the upper and lower ends; raised on an octagonal pedestal decorated with floral motifs inscribed in rounded quatrefoils on the sides, a moulded lower base and a plain and narrow octagonal plinth. The wooden cover is octagonal, flat and plain; modern. [NB: we have no information on the font(s) from the medieval church(es) here] [according to the VCH entry for this parish, all other churches in Leyton and Leytonstone are modern].
