Scene Description: museum label -- date claim rather ambitious, as the item is quite likely medieval or late-medieval; also probably not a font but a holy-water stoup

Noted and illustrated in Almeida (1971) as a holy-water stoup incorporates motifs of an earlier style. [cf. Index entry for a font at nearby Candoso São Martinho, about which Almeida has relevant remarks]. The granite stoup consists of a heptagonal basin the sides of which are decorated with six-petal rosettes, the panels on the underbowl with whorls; one of the sides is badly damaged, with a large part missing; raised on a modern pedestal base. [NB: the fabric of the present church dates to the 18th century, but the stoup appears to be medieval or late-medieval; was there an earlier font here as well?]
