The Victoria County History (Durham, vol. 3, 1928) notes: "The church of Stranton was granted by Robert de Brus to the priory of Guisborough between 1119 and 1129. [...] The earliest portion of the building is the lower part of the east and south walls of the chancel, which is apparently of 12th-century date [...] The church has been much tampered with from time to time [...] The font and pulpit and all the fittings are modern." The modern font is located inside the church, east end, south aisle. [NB: we have no information on the original font of the 12th-century church]
