The Victoria County History (Durham, vol. 3, 1928) notes: "Of the original 12th-century church the nave and tower remain [...] The font is of late 12th-century date, and consists of a circular basin of Frosterley marble on a shaft and moulded base. The Gothic cover is said to date from 1845"; the VCH illustration of the plan of the church interior shows a font at the west end of the nave, equidistant from the north and south walls. The font and an old cover are noted in Peter F. Ryder's March 1996 assessment report on this church for the Anglican Diocese of Durham [www.durham.anglican.org/userfiles/file/Durham Website/Diocese and Admin/Care of Churches/Archaeological Assessments/Redmarshall.pdf] [accessed 15 March 2012]: "The Font, at the west end of the nave, is thought to be of late 12th-century date, and is of Frosterley 'marble'. It has a circular slightly-tapered bowl and a moulded base, and stands on a more recent square stone step. The cover is modern; an earlier cover described by .... as 17th century, and by Fordyce (1857, 230), has been removed."
