Surtees (vol. 3, 1823) notes of this church: "In 1792, the whole structure being ruinous, was taken down and entirely rebuilt [...] The only parts of the old structure which are retained, are the pillars and arches on each side of the nave, forming regular ailes"; there is no mention of a font in it. Described and illustrated by the Rev. J.F. Hodgson in Transactions of the Architectural & Archaeological Society of Durham & Northumberland VI, 253 [full bib ref to be completed]. The Victoria County History (Durham, vol. 3, 1928) notes: "With the exception of the nave arcades the present structure is entirely modern, the old church having been taken down and rebuilt in 1792–3 [...] The structure taken down in 1792 [...] dated from about 1180–90 [...] early fragments discovered in 1908 [...] point to a pre-Conquest structure on the site, restored or perhaps entirely rebuilt in the early part of the 12th century. [...] The font is of the same date as the nave arcades [i.e., ca. c. 1180–90] and consists of a circular bowl of Frosterley marble, on a shaft and moulded base." Noted in Ryder (2001) [www.durham.anglican.org/userfiles/file/Durham%20Website/Diocese%20and%20Admin/Care%20of%20Churches/Archaeological%20Assessments/Greatham.pdf] [accessed 13 March 2012]
