Font Notes:
No entry found for this Elton in the Domesday survey. The Victoria County History (Durham, vol. 3, 1928) notes on the church here: "The advowson was anciently an appurtenance of the manor, though it seems to have been in dispute as early as 1185 [...] The structure dates from the 12th century, but was almost entirely rebuilt in 1841 [...] The original 12th-century south doorway has been rebuilt inside the church [...] The font and the pulpit (which is of wrought iron) also dates from 1874." The VCH (ibid.) further reports: "The pedestal of the 1841 font is in the churchyard." There is no mention in the VCH entry of a medieval font here. The modern font, at the west end of the nave, south side, is of neo-Norman table-top design, a square basin decorated with several symbols and motifs, raised on a broad central shaft and four slender colonnettes at the angles. [NB: we have no information on the mewdieval font].
