There are two entries for Chedgrave [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TM3699/chedgrave/] [accessed 3 March 2014], one of which mentions a church int it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes; "The Church was a rectory dedicated to All-Saints, and being granted by the Lady Cassandra Bainard to the priory of Buttley was appropriated thereto" [NB: the Index Monasticus (1821: 94) gives the date 1271 associated with Lady Cassandra Baynard [sic]]. The British Museum holds an etching of a table-top type baptismal font at Chedgrave [ref.: AN968381001 Department: Prints & Drawings. Registration number: 1902,0514.689. Location: British XIXc Unmounted Roy] at "Chatgrave"; the etching is lettered below the image with title and 'Etched by Cotman & F. Crome', which the BN entry expands to "Miles Edmund Cotman (?)" and "Frederic James Crome" and suggests date 1825-1831. A watercolour of this font [ca. 1835-1850?] by Miles Edmund Cotman (1810-1858) is advertised for sale at the Chris Beetles Ltd. Gallery, London, England [www.chrisbeetles.com/gallery/artist.php?art=1464] [accessed 9 March 2012]. The two sources show a font consisting of a quadrangular basin with a round basin well, raised on a broad central shaft and four angle colonnettes, on a quadrangular lower base of two volumes, and a two-step plinth, the top step square, the lower step octagonal; the whole appears plain; the lower side of the basin appears to be slightly chamfered but there is no decoration visible on the underbowl. [cf. Index entry for Chedgrave No. 2 for the later font originally from a Norwich church].
