The Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 15, 1995) notes: " The church of Little Winterbourne recorded in 1291 [...] was evidently the chapel of St. Mary Magdalene at Asserton mentioned in 1349 and 1599. [...] The chapel had a rector in the 13th century, [...] but from 1299 or earlier it was served by chaplains [...] in 1650 it was said to have been long unused. Whether in the Middle Ages it had all the attributes of a parish church is obscure: the recommendation of 1650 that Asserton be united with Berwick St. James suggests that it had some of them. [...] The church was said in 1391 to be a chapel in the manor house of Asserton. [...] In the mid 16th century it was apparently a separate building [...] and in 1650 was in ruins." [NB: we have no information on whether a font existed in it or not].
