The Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 15, 1995) notes: "Alton church was recorded from the mid 12th century [...] to the 16th. [...] It appears to have been a parish church held in the later Middle Ages by sinecurists [...] It was dilapidated c. 1590." [NB: we have no information on its baptismal font].
