Font Notes:
The disappeared medieval (?) font here is documented in an 1805 watercolour by John Buckler (1770-1851); the font consists of an octagonal basin with vertical panelled sides and a chamfered underbowl that appears to be decorated with foliage; the round stem is very short and has a roll moulding at the top; the lower base is square with odd indentations; on a two-step quadrangular plinth. The Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 15, 1995) notes: "Durrington church was standing in the early 12th century [...] The church had no dedication in 1763 [...] and was dedicated to All Saints in 1851. [...] In 1851 the church was extensively restored"; there is no mention of a font in the VCH entry for this parish. The British Listed Buildings [www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-321456-church-of-all-saints-durrington] [accessed 26 February 2012] entry for this church reports: "C19 font, neo-Norman, with columns and corners." [NB: we have no information on the present whereabouts of the baptismal font of the medieval church here].
