Church Notes: original church here said to date from the mid-12th century, perhaps earlier than the monastery itself
The present font of the monastery church here is made of a fine-grained granite and consists of a roughly hemispherical basin decorated with a roll moulding at the upper rim and a pattern of stylised ribs inscribed in round arches all around the basin and underbowl; the roll moulding of the centre ring is part of the basin stone; raised on a cylindrical base with a roll moulding at the bottom; moulded round-to-square lower base. There is damage to the upper rim, some of it repaired and consistent with the presence of cover hardware. There is a now round, flat and plain cover on the font. To the right of the font is a wall-mounted holy-water stoup of the same shape and period, perhaps the 17th century. [NB: the church here is said to date back to the mid-12th century, but we have no information on its font].
