There is a 1807 watercolour of this church by John Buckler (1770-1851); the font consists of a round tapering basin decorated with a pair of thin mouldings about half-way down the side; there is thick roll moulding at the joining of basin and base; the base is short, circular and splaying. The Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 10, 1975) notes: "Surviving masonry indicates that there was a church at Charlton in the 12th century. [...] Medieval references to the 'chapel' of Charlton suggest that it may originally have been dependent on the church of Upavon [...] The church of St. Peter, so dedicated by 1308"; there is no mention of a font in the VCH entry. The present octagonal stone font dates from the 19th century. [NB: we have no information on the whereabouts of the medieval font illustrated by Buckler].
