The Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 7, 1953) notes: "There was a priest at Rowde in 1086. [...] The Church of St. Matthew is known until 1833 as the Church of St. Mary. In that year it was rebuilt and rededicated. [...] Only the lofty 15th-century tower with battlemented parapets survives from the earlier building. [...] The font, designed by Sir Matthew Digby Wyatt, was installed in 1850". The Parish web site guide [www.rowdevillage.co.uk/html/history.html] [accessed 24 January 2012] informs: "Mr. C. H. Lowe gave the oak font cover with its central brass cross in 1887". [NB: we have no information on the medieval font here].
