Font Notes:
The Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 7, 1953) notes: "The church of Wingfield was annexed to the manor until the Dissolution [...] The church of Wingfield was below the minimum value for the purpose of the Taxatio of 1291 [...] With the exception of the 15th-century tower and chancel arch it dates from the 17th century [...] The parish registers begin in 1654 and are complete." There is no mention of a font in the VCH entry. The British Listed buildings database [www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-314709-church-of-st-mary-wingfield] [accessed 23 January 2012] reports a "square stone font with unusual fluted bowl", but does not give a date for it. The Bath in Time web site [www.bathintime.co.uk/lowres/51/main/15/335202.jpg] [accessed 23 January 2012] shows a B&W photograph of this font from ca. 1932]. The font is probably a composite object that may include re-cut parts; the square basin is unusual, both in shape and decoration, and may have been re-cut from an older basin; it is as tall as wide, an the sides have a deeply-cut fluted pattern all around; it is raised on a modern square pedestal base with narrow chamfered angles, moulded at the bottom; the font is mounted on a two-step plinth that looks older than the font.
