Church Notes: the original church said to have been destroyed by Vikings; Werri, seigneur de Walcourt, started the re-building ca. 992; continued by his son Oduin and completed ca. 1020; the fabric of the present church, however, goes back only to the 12th century

Borchgrave d'Altena (1938) notes that Oduin, lord of Walcourt, and his wife Eremburge, had the church of "Saint-Materne" built, and that it was consecrated in 1026; Borchgrave d'Altena reports damaging fires in the church in 1477, 1615 and 1914, and lillaging of the building in the 15th, 16th, 17th centuries, and during the French Revolution, and mentions, among other noteworthy furnishings here the baptismal font, without giving any details of it. There are two fonts in this church, both of them listed and illustrated in BALaT KIK-IRPA;
1) [https://balat.kikirpa.be/object/10076387] [accessed 28 December 2023]: an octagonal basin with four protruding heads set at 90-degree angles, standing on an ill-matched base of clustered columns: "fonts baptismaux [...] Cuve des anciens fonts à quatre têtes [...] hauteur: 58 cm; largeur: 88 cm; profondeur: 88 cm [...] dans le jardin" [NB: this font was restored to the inside of the church at a later date]
2) [https://balat.kikirpa.be/object/10076388] [accessed 28 December 2023]: a neo-Gothic font: the basin is somewhat similar to the older one; it stands on a matching octagonal pedestal base and has a metal font cover: "fonts baptismaux [...] Cuve à quatre têtes [...] Date: 1901 - 1910 [...] couvercle des fonts baptismaux avec statuette de saint Jean-Baptiste voir irpa n° 10076388".
