Hussell (1910) writes of this church: "There are no known records of the structure previous to 1308 [...] but there is tradition to the effect that a church was erected at Mortehoe in 1170 [...] An examination of the church shows that a Norman structure, probably a chapel, formerly occupied a portion of the site of the present church; for there are traces still left which bear this out, chief of this is an undoubtedly Norman archway in the north wall of the nave, leading into the tower [...] the Norman building was not demolished, but altered, and considerably enlarged [...] The font is [...] modern". The British Listed Buildings [www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-98455-church-of-st-mary-magdalene-mortehoe] [accessed 19 December 2011] reports: "Octagonal bowl to font on shaft with lipped capital and square base.", probably referred to the later font. [NB: we have no information on the original font here].
