Church Notes: Jarrow church was originally built in 684 A.D. , and dedicated on 23 April 685, as part of the Benedictine monastery there; the present church encloses parts of the ancient conventual church
The present font at Jarrow church is octagonal with plain slightly concave sides rounded at the underbowl; raised on an octagonal slender pedestal base and a splaying lower base, both octagonal and plain as well; this font is probably 17th or 18th century, and is the 1773 ink-wash-on-paper drawing by Samuel Hieronymus Grimm (1733-1794) in the British Library Collections [Shelfmark: Additional MS 15540 - Item number: f.9]; Grimm's drawing shows it topped with an octagonal cover of eight external [wooden?] ribs and four [metal?] interior ones, the latter gathering at the finial; the present cover, howver, is octagonal and flat, with metal decoration and ring handle, and appears of a later date, probably Victorian. [NB: the present church includes parts of the original conventual building of the 7th century, but we have no information of the earlier font(s) here].
