There is an entry for Ufton [Nervert] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SU6367/ufton-nervet/] [accessed 11 February 2015]; there is also an entry for Ufton [Robert] [variant spelling] [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SU6268/ufton-robert/] [accessed 11 February 2015]; neither mentions cleric or church in it. A modern font is noted inside the church, and two other fonts in the churchyard are referred to and illustrated in Sharp (1892): "The Rev. Alfred Suckling, in a collection of MS. notes church of preserved in the British Museum, dated 1838, says of the St. Peter interior that it possessed few attractions, and that the font was modern ; probablv the one he saw was the plain round bowl, shown in the illustration at the end of this chapter as lying on the ground." Sharp (ibid.) also reports that an inventory of St. Peter's furniture recorded in 1784 mentioned "a bason in the font" [NB: this reference may well note the type of metal insert that is used in the font in lieu of a lining]. Sharp (ibid.) further reports that the font in use at the time of her writing: "The present font is the same date as the church", and that an earlier one -but not medieval- stands outside the church: "One previously presented by Mr. Christie's family stands in the churchyard", and an illustration of both the yard fonts is provided. The Victoria County History (Berkshire, vol. 3, 1923) notes: "There were originally two churches in Ufton. Of these the church of St. Peter belonged to the manor of Ufton Robert after 1222 [...] The church of St. Peter was erected in 1862 [...] There are no remains of the earlier fabric save some of the furniture and monuments. [...] The stone font is modern [...] An older font lies under the yew tree in the churchyard." The British Listed Buildings database entry for this church [www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-40052-church-of-st-peter-ufton-nervet] [accessed 5 December 2011] reports: "probably C12 tub font; C19 octagonal stone font with shafted base and trefoiled panels on alternate faces".
