A very large circular vessel with sides decorated with an arcade of round arches populated by seated hieratic figures, beneath a band of foliated decoration; at the centre is Christ in Majesty in a mandorla, with the four Evangelists's symbols at the angles; to the sides, left and right, seated figures, presumably the Apostles and other saintly figures; the band below is populated with angels, animals, etc.; it is raised on a round base which may be part of the basin stone. Some sources claim it was bought here from the Benedictine monastery at Cluny [cf. infra]. Noted in www.badische-seiten.de/bilder/st-ulrich/ [accessed 4 December 2011]: "A special place for art lovers in Möhlintal at the monastery church of St. Ulrich. Der romanische Taufstein stammt wahrscheinlich aus dem einstigen Kloster Cluny im französischen Burgund [= The Romanesque baptismal font is probably from the former monastery of Cluny in Burgundy, France]. It has a diameter of about 2.59 meters and is about 8 tons]. [=How to travel such a long way to the baptismal font in the remote Black Forest village was, is still a mystery]. Die Klostergründung am Randes des 1294 Meter hohen Schauinslands geht auf den heiligen Ulrich von Regensburg zurück, der 1087 von Cluny kam [=The monastery was founded at the edge of the 1294 meter high Schauinsland goes back to the holy Ulrich von Regensburg, the 1087 came from Cluny]. [=When Ulrich died in 1093 and was buried in his monastery, began a great devotion]. [=According to tradition, many miracles were done through the invocation of the holy St. Ulrich]. Also worth mentioning is the Romanesque baptismal font in the courtyard of the monastery and that was in 1771 northeast of the church built over an older source with the Ulrich's well chapel].
