The Victoria County History (Berkshire, vol. 3, 1923) notes: "The church of Burghfield was attached in 1086 to the manor held of Ralph Mortimer [...] The [present] church of St. Mary the Virgin was erected in 1843 on an old site. [...] All the internal fittings are modern except the font, which has a large tapering bowl, probably of 12th-century date, and originally circular, but recut into its present ten-sided form with shallow trefoil-headed panels late in the 14th century. The moulded base is in its original state, and has a cable-moulded upper member."
