view of church interior - nave - looking east

Scene Description: with the chancel arch at the far [east] end -- the altar, however, is not in its usual position, and has been placed instead at the west end of the nave, hence the orientation of the seats -- notice also the position of the modern font, at the southeast corner of the nave; the old pulpit, on the other hand, has not been moved accordingly

Font Notes:
There is an entry for Cholsey [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SU5886/cholsey/] [accessed 27 March 2015]; it mentions a church and one hide of church lands in it. The Victoria County History (Berkshire, vol. 3, 1923) notes: "William I granted the church to the abbey of Mont St. Michel, in Normandy, which held it of him in 1086 [...] The earliest church on this site of which traces remain was probably of the first half of the 11th century", and the first book of baptisms here starts in 1541. There is no mention of a font in the VCH entry but a font, probably a modern one, is shown in the church interior plan, in the middle of the nave, near the south wall.
