There is an entry for this Barkham [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SU7866/barkham/] [accessed 26 March 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The Victoria County History (Berkshire, vol. 3, 1923) notes: "The church of St. James is mentioned in 1220, when William de Wenda, Dean of Salisbury, held a visitation at Sonning [...] The [present] church of St. James is a modern building [...] It was erected on an old site in 1862", and all that remains from the earlier church is perhaps "a carved wooden effigy, probably of the 13th century, of a lady in a long, loose dress and linen head-dress. Both the hands are missing and the face is much damaged", in a recess of the east wall of the porch. [NB: we have no information on the font from the medieval church here].
