There is an entry for Windsor [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SU9676/windsor/] [accessed 18 March 2015]; it mentions a priest and one and a half hides of church lands in it [cf. infra]. Hearn (1810) quotes from a 1722 source: "The Church of Old Windsor in Berks is ancient, and consists of one Isle [i.e., aisle], in which is an octogon font (in the Angles of which are a W, a cross, two cross Keys, a Rose, a Lilly, an Anchor, and 2 defaced". The Victoria County History (Berkshire, vol. 3, 1923) notes: "A priest held 1½ hides at Old Windsor at the time of the Great Survey [i.e., 1086] [...] and therefore probably a church existed. In 1189 the church of Old Windsor was granted by Richard I to Waltham Abbey for the hospitality of the monastery, being then described as a chapel belonging to St. John's Church at New Windsor. [...] The tower and the east wall of the chancel are of the early 13th century [...] the font is apparently of early 17th-century date, being similar in design to the one in the parish church at Bray. It is octagonal with a moulded stem; the upper part is panelled with quatrefoiled arches, in which are leaves and symbolic devices."
