No entry found for Abingdon in the Domesday survey. The Victoria County History (Berkshire, vol. 4, 1924) notes: "The church of St. Nicholas is first mentioned in the late 12th century, when it appears to have been a chapel to the abbey church. [...] The nave dates from c. 1200 [...] The font has an octagonal bowl with a quatrefoil panel in each face. The stem is buttressed and has traceried panels on the sides." The font consists of an octagonal basin with quatrefoil-in-a-circle panels with an motif in the centres (square flower, blank shield), with moulded upper and lower rims; plain underbowl chamfer; octagonal pedestal stem with two levels of tracery windows between buttresses; the moulded lower base is also octagonal. The wooden cover is octagonal, with metal decoration and ring handle; appears modern. [NB: we have no information on the earlier font of the 12th-century church].
