The museum label records its origin in the chapel of the ancient hospice for abandoned children, and notes that "up until the French Revolution, all abandoned children were automatically baptised as son as they arrived at the hospital" [in English, on the label] -- [the font was deposited in the museum by the CHU [Centre hospitalier universitaire]]
