No entry for a Fawley in Berkshire found in the Domesday survey. The Victoria County History (Berkshire, vol. 4, 1924) notes: "The church of Fawley [...] seem[s] to have formed part of the original grant to the nuns of Amesbury, for they are mentioned in the charter of 1179 [...] as well as in those of 1199 [...] and 1270. [...] The church was probably appropriated to the nuns at an early date, certainly before 1291, when the prioress was rector of the church, which was valued at £2 10s. [...] The church of St. Mary replaces an older structure which stood further to the east, the graveyard of which remains. The new church was erected in 1865–6 and the old building was taken down in the latter year. No record of its plan or appearance seems to have been kept, but some fragments which have been used in the new structure show that some parts, at least, were of late 12th or early 13th-century date. [...] The font and pulpit are both modern." The present font, with a basin raised on short columns is probably dated to the re-building of the church. David Ross [www.britainexpress.com/counties/berkshire/churches/fawley.htm] [accessed 25 May 2015] reports: "a pair of 12th century stoups at the west end" of the new church, salvaged from the old building. NB: we have no information on the font of the original church here].
we have no information on the medieval font].
