Church Notes: the new church was built in 1829 to replace the medieval one damaged in the 1825 storm; the old church was re-built partially and stands as a chapel now
There is a 1773 ink-wash-on-paper drawing of the font at Holy Trinity Fleet by Samuel Hieronymus Grimm (1733-1794) in the British Library collections [Shelfmark: Additional MS 15537 - Item number: f.144]. The drawing shows a font consisting of a round elongated basin decorated with a rope moulding around the upper rim, and a blind arcade of intersecting round arches on columns with capitals and bases around the sides; it is raised on a plain cylindrical pedestal base, and a round-to-square lower base with spurs at the four angles. The British Listed Buildings database entry for this church [www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-105234-parish-church-of-the-holy-trinity-fleet] [accessed 28 October 2011], however, reports: "Font, C19, stone bowl with intersecting arching and arcaded base." The Cornish Churches web site [http://cornishchurches.com/Dorset%20Churches/Fleet%20Church%20Dorset%20-%20Holy%20Trinity/index.htm] [accessed 28 October 2011] illustrates a font which, though obviously modern, much resembles the one depicted in Grimm [cf. supra], except that the modern font has its pedestal base decorated with a blind arcade of pointed arches with triquetra in the spandrels. This modern font matches the description in the British Listed Buildings entry above, and is probably a 19th-century replacement replica font of the medieval (?) one, which may have been destroyed in the calamitous Great Storm of 1824 that destroyed part of Fleet, including the nave of the old church.
