There is an entry for this Salford in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SP9339/salford/] [accessed 22 July 2014], but it mentions neither church nor cleric in it. The Victoria County History (Bedford, vol. 3, 1912) notes: "Salford Church was granted to Newnham Priory by Nigel de Salford in the 12th century"; there is no mention of a font in the VCH entry, but parts of the chancel and the south aisle are dated in it to the 13th century. The British Listed Buildings database entry for this church [www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-38313-church-of-saint-mary-the-virgin-hulcote-a] [accessed 26 October 2011] notes: "Simple font with beaker-shaped bowl on cylindrical stem", but does not suggest a date for it. The font consists of a plain bucket-shaped basin raised on a cylindrical pedestal base with round mouldings at both ends, raised on a modern plinth. The font appears ancient, probably medieval, and shows a repair with new-stone insert at the upper rim. The wooden cover, round, flat and plain, is modern.
