There are six entries for Riseley [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TL0462/riseley/] [accessed 15 September 2015], none of which mention cleric or church in it, except for the lord in 1086, Alric the priest. The Victoria County History (Bedford, vol. 3, 1912) notes: "The advowson of the church of Riseley formed a part of Alice de Clermont's grant to the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, [...] and remained their property until the Dissolution. [...] In 1291 the value of the church was £4 5s. 8d., [...] and at the Dissolution £8 17s. 10d. [...] The earliest masonry is that of the south wall of the south aisle, which is the original nave of 12th-century date, to which a north aisle was added late in the same century. [...] In the south aisle is a 15th-century octagonal font". [NB: 'Alice de Clermont', also Adelaide, Adeliza, Adelize, etc. (1058-1117), was the daughter of Hugh Count of Clermont [source: www.geni.com/people/Adeliza-de-Clermont-De-Clare/6000000006125813004 [accessed 12 October 2011] -- we have no information on the original font of the 11th-century church here].
