The three archivolt Romanesque portals and the side doors and lintels still remain from the original. It is said that in 1143, Lamego hosted the first cortes (national assembly) to recognize Afonso Henriques as king of Portugal, following his self-declaration of 1139, and also that he was crowned in this church. In the 18th century the church was radically altered and was decorated with the azulejos and the carved and gilded altars seen today."
