No entry found for this Whitwell in the Domesday survey. The Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 5, 1912) notes: "The original church evidently was an aisleless one with narrow chancel, divided by an arch, [...] built towards the close of the 12th century by the lords of Gatcombe, who raised there an altar to their patron, St. Radegund. [...] A general remodelling was undertaken in 1868"; no font is mentioned in the VCH entry. The monolithic baptismal font, which is attached to tower arch, is an octagonal basin in which the lower third changes to a square shape via triangular chamfers. It rests directly on the ground. The font is whitewashed all over. The wooden cover is octagonal and flat, with metal decoration on ring handle; appears modern.
