There is an entry for Sopley [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SZ1596/sopley/] [accessed 13 February 2020] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 5, 1912) notes: "The church of Sopley was granted to the priory of Christchurch in about 1140 [...] In the 13th century the church was greatly enlarged [...] Late in the 14th century the nave was completely rebuilt [...] The font, probably of the late 14th century, has a plain octagonal bowl, stem and base, which have been re-tooled, and stands under the east arch of the tower." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SZ1673798427] notes: "Parish church. C13, earlier origins, restored C15, C19 & C20. [...] Under tower retooled C14 font."
