view of church exterior - southeast view

Scene Description: Source caption: "St Margaret's Church, Downs Road, South Wonston [...] The church occupies a narrow site within the row of residential houses along Downs Road. The church was partly sunken to meet objections about its height from neighbours. The tower-like structure sadly lacks a spire or other feature to top it off [...] This southeastern side of the church is only visible from the grounds of the school which are not open to the public."

The Parish web site [www.southwonston-church.co.uk/History of church.html] [accessed 31 August 2011] notes that St. Margaret is a Mission church of 1909: "Baptisms could be performed there and recorded in the Wonston baptism register, but marriages and funerals would take place at the parish church in Wonston. [...] While most of the fittings were bought or donated, the stone font was actually ‘the ancient one of the parish’, possibly around 400 years old. It had been discovered under the floorboards of the parish church in Wonston, after a serious fire there just a few months before the mission church was opened. It is believed to have been deliberately buried there in 1871, when a new font had been presented to the parish church. " The font consists of an octagonal basin rounded at the underbowl, raised on an octagonal pedestal base decorated with trefloiled arches or windows on the sides, and a moulded octagonal lower base.
