Scene Description: the new font and cover in the new church -- Source caption: "St. John's, Northington, Hants. A splendid Victorian church by T. G. Jackson with nearly all the original fittings. The architect worked on few churches, but visitors to Oxford would have seen his Examination Halls('schools')and 'Bridge of Sighs' off Broad Street. Seeing the work he did at Northington, it's a pity that so little of his work was in the ecclesiastical field."

No entry found for Northington in the Domesday survey. The Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 3, 2011] notes: "For many years Northington was a chapelry attached to Micheldever vicarage. A chapel was in existence at the time of the appropriation of Micheldever to Hyde Abbey, i.e. in 1308 [...] The church of St. John the Evangelist is a fine modern building [...] The site of the old church is to the north-east, a little lower on the hill-side, marked by the tombstones of the old churchyard and a cross on the place where the church stood." The font in the new church is modern, an octagonal with angel demi-figures on the underbowl, raised on clustered colonnettes; tall wooden cover with crocketed arrises on a counterweight hoist. [NB: we have no information on the font of the early chapel/church]
