A baptismal font in the nave of the cathedral at present [July 2011] is a stone font originally from the Eglise Sainte-Croix, also in Bordeaux. The font is carved out of a single limestone block of which the upper half constitutes the basin proper, the lower half having been reduced in size to resemble a plain pedestal base except for one of the angles in which a column has been carved; the basin proper has three sides roughly at 90-degree angles; of the three two are decorated with a blind arcade of horseshoe arches supported on crude columns with moulded capitals and bases; the carving is damaged, but it was originally rather roughly rendered, not a carefully rendered piece by an expert master; the third side, though flat as the other two, is blank, roughed to a completely plain surface; the next three sides are smaller and completely rough, much narrower and not well-defined; this area was obviously made to fit into a corner of the church, hidden from view. Its original location in Sainte-Croix is not known. The nort side of the font bears a stock number in black lettering [either '11879' or '1188[?]']. The font does not appear to be in use for baptisms at present. [NB: the cathedral was originally consecrated in 1096 by Pope Urban II; re-built in the 12th century and again in the 16th century; we have no information on its medieval font].
