No entry found for this Cheriton in the Domesday survey. The Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 3, 1908) notes: "The church of Cheriton, one of the most valuable livings in the diocese of Winchester, has always belonged to the bishops. In 1284 the king gave up to John bishop of Winchester and his successors all his right in the advowson of Cheriton. [...] The church of St. Michael [...] is in the main a thirteenth-century building [...] The font, near the south door of the nave, is modern, as are all the internal fittings". The present font consists of an octagonal basin with verticals sides, for of which are decorated with a floral motif inscribed in a circle, the underbowl moulded; raised on a cluster of four columns with foliated capitals and moulded bases; on a plinth. The wooden cover is round, flat and plain. Both font and cover are modern. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SP6136627611] notes: "Stone pulpit and font and other furnishings all C19." [NB: we have no information on the medieval font]. The VCH (ibid.) further notes that the Church of St. James, in nearby Beauworth, was built in the 19th century and has "a small marble bowl on a wooden pedestal, doing duty as a font." Beauworth would probably not have had an earlier church or font since its baptismal records are included in Cheriton's registers.
