Font Notes:
There is an entry for this Crofton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU5504/crofton/] [accessed 25 October 2018]; it reports a church in it. The Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 3, 1908) notes: "There was a church at Crofton in 1086 which is probably identical with the chapel of St. Edmund mentioned in the fourteenth century in connexion with the grant of the manor to the abbot and convent of Titchfield. [...] As it was never assessed separately in any ecclesiastical valuation, and there is no evidence to show that it has ever been a separate ecclesiastical unit, it was probably a chapel of ease to Titchfield and was served by the same incumbent. [...] owing to modern alterations there is little guide to the earlier history of the building. The chancel and north transept seem to be early fourteenth-century work". There is no mention of a font in the VCH. [NB: we have no information on the possible medieval font of this church -- Holy Rood Church is modern, consecrated in 1878. The Crofton Parish web site [www.croftonparish.org.uk] [accessed 12 August 2011] informs: "The St Edmund's church building has also seen something of a renaissance in recent years. Following the formation of FOCOC (Friends of Crofton Old Church) in the 1980s, St Edmund's has undergone significant renovations, and since the 1990s there have been regular weekly services within the renovated church building"]. The entry for this church in Historic England notes: "Crofton Old Church (St Edmund the Martyr). Chancel and S Chapel possibly C13 origins. C14 N transept; C15 nave; early C18 S transept rebuilt in mid C19; Victorian vestry. [...] Simple stone font probably C15." The baptismal font at the new Crofton church, Holy Rood, is contemporary with the building, i.e., 1877-1878, and is described in the entry for this church in Historic England [List Entry Number: 1351268]: "Original stone font, octagonal with carved side panels to bowl and marble colonettes to base; now placed beneath a modern hanging cross in the narthex."
