No entry found for Petersfield in the Domesday survey. The Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 3, 2011) notes: "The church of St. Peter [...] is a fine building, of great interest for several reasons, and its earliest parts are not later than the beginning of the twelfth century. [...] About 1170–80 the church was enlarged by the addition to the nave of north and south aisles [...] The west tower is of four stages, the top stage being of fifteenth-century date [...] The side walls on the ground stage are solid, but in the east wall is a wide semicircular arch of two square orders, c. 1120–30. [...] The roofs and fittings of the church are entirely modern, including the font at the west end of the nave; but an older font, octagonal with panelled sides, of early fifteenth-century date, stands in the churchyard west of the tower." The church underwent a major restoration by Sir Arthur Blomfield in 1873. The Parish web site [www.stpeterspetersfield.org.uk] [accessed 12 August 2011] notes: "The fifteenth century font was removed from its position at the east end of the nave [...] and replaced by a modern one at the west end. In 1946, the fifteenth century font was rescued from the churchyard, where it had been left for seventy years, and replaced at the east end." In 1993, part of the re-ordering of the church carried out under the vicar, Chris Lowson, by architect Paul Velluet, included "Converting the area below the tower to a permanent chapel and moving the font forward". The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SU7462323210] does not mention a font in it. [NB: we have no information on the font of the 11th-12th century church here]
