Font Notes:
There is an entry for this Chalton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU7315/chalton/] [accessed 19 June 2018]; it reports two church in it. The Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 3, 1908) notes: "The advowson of the church of Chalton probably belonged to the various lords of the manor of Chalton until 1102 [...] The chancel is the oldest part of the [present] building, a fine and well-proportioned piece of mid-thirteenthcentury work [...] The font stands at the west end of the nave, and is octagonal, with quatrefoiled panels on the bowl inclosing alternately blank shields or paterae carved with heads or foliage. Its date is c. 1400, and it closely resembles the font at Idsworth a few miles away. Both fonts have also been broken at the base of the bowl, by tradition in the civil wars." The crack on the lower side of the basin is still obvious, and there is further damage at the upper rim. Each panel on the basin sides have a large quatrefoil inscribed in a circle, an object inscribed in the quatrefoil: the shields are blank; among the objects: a lion head, a Tudor rose, a square flower, etc.
