No idividual entry found in the Domesday survey for Burghclere [cf. VCH entry]. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 4, 1911) notes: "In the Domesday Survey of 1086 mention is made of the priest Alvric who held of the Bishop of Winchester 1 hide of land with the church in Clere." The VCH (ibid.) mentions the present parish Church of the Ascension, but adds: "The old church of ALL SAINTS at Burghclere is ot greater interest [...] The nave dates from 1100–20, except some 25 ft. at the west end, which is an addition of about 1240. The original chancel was rebuilt 1220, and about 1280 the north transept was added. [...] The font is a modern square one of 12th-century style." This new font is located at the west end of the nave. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SU4777458316] notes: "The fittings are Victorian except for bench pews of the C16." The font in the old church is modern. [NB: we have no information on the medieval font from this church]. The new parish church, Church of the Ascension, dates from the 19th century.
