Font Notes:
There is an entry for this Newbury [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU4766/newbury/] [accessed 21 May 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The Victoria County History (Berkshire, vol. 4, 1924) notes: "The church of St. Nicholas, possibly in origin a chapelry of Thatcham, was granted [...] by Ernulf de Hesding to the abbey of St. Pierre de Préaux probably about 1080 [...] The whole of the building, excepting the modern vestry, was built at the beginning of the 16th century. [...] The octagonal stone font is modern and has panelled sides. Over it is an elaborate carved wooden tabernacle suspended from an iron bracket." [NB: we have no information on the earlier fonts here]. The present font at St. Nicholas' is modern, "Octagonal stone font, by Henry Woodyer, presented in 1866", according to the church guide [www.st-nicolas-newbury.org/visitors-guide.htm] [accessed 2 November 2011]. [NB: the present baptismal font of the modern church of St. John the Evangelist is also modern; it has scenes of the life of Christ, by Alan Lydiat Durst (1883-1970) [http://www.stjohnnewbury.org.uk/section/17] -- the church itself is of 1859-1860; it was destroyed by a bomb in 1943, and re-built thereafter]. The other churches of Newbury (St. John, CofE, and St. Joseph, RC) are modern.
