Scene Description: Source caption: "Inscription above the porch of the 13th century Church of St. Peter in West Liss, Hampshire. Two quotations from the Book of Psalms commemorate the gift of this porch in 1639 by Henry James: One thing have I desired of the LORD that I will seek after, that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD and to enquire in his temple. Psalm XXVII 4v. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness. Psalm LXXXIV 10v."

There is an entry for Liss [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU7728/liss/] [accessed 2 August 2018] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 4, 1911) notes: "Liss Church was probably one of the two churches held by two priests of the manor of Odiham at the time of the Domesday Survey. [...] It was granted by King Stephen [r. 1135-1154] , with the churches of Bentworth and Odiham, to the use of the master of the Choristers' School of Salisbury and the chancellor of the cathedral [...] The west tower dates from the first half of the 13th century [...] The internal fittings are modern except the octagonal font, which is of 15th-century date, with quatrefoils in each face of the bowl, and an octagonal stem and moulded base." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SU7712828438], however, describes the font here as "Victorian Perpendicular". The church of St. Mary is 19th-century.
