There are two entries for [Great] Sturton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TF2176/great-sturton/] [accessed 11 March 2019], one of which reports a church in it. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TF2152976660] notes: "C14 octagonal font heavily restored in early C20 with flowing cusped decoration and tall octagonal base with cusped ogee heads." The font consists of an octagonal basin decorated with a wave all around, the spaces of the wave decorated with cusped motifs; above and below, a combination of mouldings; the underbowl is plain and slightly concave; raised on an octagonal pedestal base decorated with a moulding atop and arches or windows on the sides; splaying lower base. The wooden cover is octagonal, flat and plain. [NB: not quite certain how much of the present carving resembles the original -- the fabric of the church goes back to Norman times but we have no information of a font of that period in this church].
