There is an entry for Winslow [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SP7627/winslow/] [accessed 25 November 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Sheahan (1862) notes the late-Medieval church but does not mention a font in it. The section 'Tenders and Contracts' of The Furniture Gazette (edition of 17 January 1883: 60) reports the reopening of this church "after general restoration", and reports "a new font" in it [NB: this reference may refer to a replacement font at the time; the old font was restored in 1938 [cf. infra] and brought back into the church. We have no information on the whereabouts of the replacement font, if the report in The Furniture... was accurate]. The Victoria County History (Buckingham, vol. 3, 1925) notes: "The church of Winslow is mentioned in 1198, when it was confirmed to St. Albans Abbey by Richard I [...] The building dates from about 1320 [...] The church was restored in 1884 and the chancel aisle added in 1889"; the font is mentioned in passing only as being in the tower. The font is located now at the west end of the south aisle; it consists of an octagonal basin with plain sides and a slightly recessed upper rim; the plain panels of the basin are dissimilar, and at least one of them ends in a point below, whereas most [all?] of the others have a flat end; raised on an octagonal stem with a moulding at the bottom; moulded lower base and polygonal plinth, both apparently modern. A Waymarking posting by greysman [www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WMG06K_Font_Curch_of_StLaurence_Winslow_Buckinghamshire] [accessed 25 November 2015] notes: "There is an inscription round the chamfered edge of the step stating:- In Memory of / Norman McCorquodale / This 14th cen[tury] font is restored by his children 1938. [...] It has been provided with a timber cover which has iron grid fret-work and a central ring for lifting. The letters ST L are incorporated twice and there are four fleur de lis on the sides of the grid." [NB: we have no information on the font from the 12th-century church here].
